Our Sweet Karoline® blackberry is a favorite among all our customers. Developed through our exclusive breeding program, we carefully cross-pollinated blackberry plants, just like nature does, to develop newer ones with better genetics. It’s a meticulous process of selection that can take years.

For Sweet Karoline®, it was a seven year journey that resulted in a dark, sweet, and delicious blackberry.

The Art & Science of Berry Breeding

Our process follows the same journey as natural breeding. Our goal is to bring you a better berry, and to do that takes a blend of passion and science.

Step 1

We start by carefully selecting two berry plants, each with something special to offer. Maybe one is juicy and sweet but a bit soft. The other grows more firm berries with a great bite. These act as our parent plants.

Step 2

We gently transfer pollen between the two chosen parent plants with a paint brush. This transfer is very similar to what bees naturally do. We’ve now created the conditions for new baby plants with the best traits from both parent plants.

Step 3

Now, those baby plants grow! Those tiny seeds produce many different plants, each with their own mix of special traits.

Step 4

The long, meticulous process begins. We carefully choose only the very best baby plants that show promise. We breed those over and over again until we find the “perfect” plant. (This process can truly take time. For our Sweet Karoline® blackberries, it took seven years!)

Step 5

Once we find that perfect combination of flavor, texture, and lasting freshness, we clone that plant. It’s called the “mother plant.” To clone her, we then take tiny pieces of the root to create new baby plants. This process is done many times over and soon you have many fields’ worth of baby plants for planting.

For our team, it’s a meticulous process of testing and selecting only the best varieties. Our selection criteria are comprehensive, focusing on flavor, growing conditions, and how they perform in diverse environments. We also keep consumers in mind, scrutinizing shelf life and the overall eating experience. It’s how we deliver the best berries that meet our standards and yours.
